For 20 years now I have dropped my dirty clothes into the washing basket and they magically reappear washed back in my wardrobe. Not only that they are always quite smooth and free of creases, like someone has pressed a large hot flat object over them? (Apparently this is called a "iron" so my wife tells me) so I thought I'd treat the missus and give her the Breville Steam generator for our 20th wedding anniversary. Despite my generous nature she didn't appreciate it (a bit like the vacuum cleaner I got her for her birthday?) so I thought I'd use it myself! (I can't be that hard, I mean, Pingu's dad is always ironing when none of them wear clothes right?)Anyway, the iron itself looks & feels like a standard iron, with a stainless steel soleplate and the usual heat dial. The only thing different there is no water compartment built in and instead you get a HUGE base unit with a removable water tank at the front. I'll start by saying that if you live alone or in a household where ironing is a black art best never attempted unless it is life or death, then this is not the product for you.It's a bit Heath Robinson when you unpack it and start the beast up. Pumping and gurgling like the ghost of a 1940s immersion heater on overload, a couple of minutes later the lights go off or go steady (one for steam and one for temperature are the ones to watch) and you are ready. Off we go, and immediately you see why this is a seriously heavy duty iron. It goes through the toughest creases like a hot knife through butter. The feeling of using it is that this is for a situation where you are about to attack a ton of laundry and those extra few minutes of switching on and filling the detachable water tank are worthwhile. Overall this iron seems well made and well designed. It is easy to use, heats up quickly and it does what it's supposed to. At the end of the day though it really ought to out-perform or at least match my old steam generator (I've had it 3-4 years and it has similar spec) but it is nowhere near as good. The steam just doesn't seem to penetrate as well, such as double thicknesses having to be ironed on both sides like pillowcases, my old one would quickly remove all the creases with a blast of steam and go through both layers eliminating the need to iron both sides and considerably cutting down on ironing time. There seems little point in having a steam generator if it doesn't do this. One pass should be all it takes to un-crease a duvet cover or sheet but this one seems to only iron as well as a good steam iron I'm not sure why this but I have passed this along now and have gone back to my old one. |
